The storm-damaged road that provides the only vehicle access to northern Asharoken and Eatons Neck will reopen for two-lane traffic Wednesday night.

Village attorney Kenneth Savin said after Huntington Town highway workers Wednesday further cleaned up the pavement and shoulder where the protecting sea wall was washed over and damaged by Saturday's nor'easter, both lanes would open for two-way traffic Wednesday evening.

Asharoken Avenue will go back to alternating single-lane travel at the northern end of the village Thursday and for several more days while town crews continue to clean up the flood damage; but the road will be fully open at night.

After the town completes its work, the road will open for two-lane traffic as before the storm, unless high tides and high winds compromise safety, officials said.

Restoration of two lanes will provide a respite for village police and town public safety officers who have been charged with blocking or directing traffic through the area since Saturday.

The damage to the sea wall just south of the village's juncture with Eatons Neck likely won't be repaired until fall, an Army Corps of Engineers official said Tuesday.
