Cops: Man working on truck in Blue Point struck, killed by car
A Centereach man working on a pickup truck Tuesday along the side of a road in Blue Point was struck and killed after another motorist crashed into his vehicle, Suffolk police said.
Oscar Lopez-Machado, 44, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
About 4:40 p.m. Tuesday, he was working on a 2006 Dodge Ram on the northbound side of Kennedy Avenue. A Suffolk police spokesperson said late Tuesday that the driver of a 2009 Hyundai Elantra, heading south on Kennedy, then struck the pickup as Lopez-Machado stood in front of it.
The driver of the Elantra was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue for an evaluation, police said.
Additional details, including the circumstances surrounding how the driver struck Lopez-Machado on the opposite side of Kennedy Avenue were not available late Tuesday.
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.
Suffolk detectives ask anyone with information on the crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
