A Central Islip man left his malnourished Rottweiler out in the rain while she gave birth to nine puppies, the Suffolk SPCA said Thursday.

Calvin E. Scott, 50, of 7 Prospect St., Central Islip, was arrested Wednesday and charged with 10 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty, said Roy Gross, chief of the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Scott was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in First District Court in Central Islip. Arraignment information was not immediately available.

The adult Rottweiler had been tethered outside with no shelter amid a rainstorm as she gave birth to her puppies late Tuesday or early Wednesday, Gross said. The dogs did not have food or water, he said.

The mother was malnourished, and the puppies were underweight, Gross said. One of the puppies died Thursday, he said.

SPCA officials hope to rehabilitate the surviving pups and their mother and eventually put them up for adoption, Gross said.

Scott could not be reached for comment.
