Suffolk County Emergency Service Unit officers rescued a dog from a partially frozen canal behind a Copiague home Tuesday.

The dog, a German Shepherd mix named Princess, was tranquilized after several attempts by the officers to remove her from the canal using an animal control pole and a ladder, a police spokeswoman said.

Her owners then took her to a nearby veterinarian; the dog was not injured, the spokeswoman said.

Officers Mike Cummings and James Jackson responded to an emergency call at about 5:20 p.m. from an East Drive home about a dog trapped on the ice.

Cummings donned an ice suit and tried first removing the dog with the pole and the ladder, police said.

When the dog became "aggressive," she was tranquilized by police, and the officers were able to remove her with the pole, the spokeswoman said.

She was then covered with a blanket and returned to her owners.
