Two Bellport men were arrested, charged with robbing a 70-year-old woman Friday at the Sunshine Square Mall in Medford, Suffolk County police said.
The victim was placing her groceries in the trunk of her vehicle when the men approached her, one of them grabbing her pocketbook from her shoulder, police said. The woman fought back, but the suspect shoved her to the ground and fled with the pocketbook about 5:25 p.m.
Several bystanders reported witnessing the struggle and began to chase the suspect through the mall parking lot.
One witness saw the man enter a parked vehicle across the street from the mall on Patchogue Yaphank Road and gave a description to responding police officers, who later found the vehicle, police said.
Police arrested Sean Hurney, of 32 Colonial Lane in Bellport, and Anthony Deprospo, of 80 Association Rd. in Bellport.
They were both charged with third-degree robbery. Hurney was also charged with one count of possession of a hypodermic needle.
Deprospo, 22, and Hurney, 21, are scheduled to be arraigned Saturday in First District Court in Central Islip.
The 70-year-old woman had minor injuries but did not require medical attention, police said.
