District investigates Commack students reportedly wearing anti-Semitic T-shirts

The Commack school district says it is investigating the actions behind pictures taken off campus of students on spring break reportedly wearing anti-Semitic T-shirts.

In one photo, posted on social media, two students are playing a drinking game while wearing red T-shirts.

Swastikas are drawn in black marker in the middle of the shirts, with the word "Auschwitz."

School district officials confirmed that the students in the photograph attend the high school.

The statement, posted on the district's website, said it "became aware of pictures posted on social media taken off-campus, at a house party, during spring break."

In the statement, the district said the "actions of these students are not representative of the student body at Commack High School. We do not condone or permit any form of discrimination, bullying, or hateful messaging."

The district also said it is "not legally permitted to confirm or release the names of the students involved in this incident or to release any consequences that may or may not be meted out as a result."

The statement also said the district's attorneys have determined that because the incident took place off-campus and during an event not sponsored by the school, "the school is limited in its ability to address this matter."

It was not clear where the photographs were taken.

The statement did say the district is "taking all necessary steps to investigate and will mete out discipline related to this where legally permissible."

The incident marks the second time in five months that students from the district have been photographed in shirts displaying inappropriate messages. In September, high school students were photographed on campus wearing T-shirts that spelled out "rape."
