A Sayville man drowned in the Great South Bay in West Sayville while crabbing Friday afternoon, Suffolk County police said.

Police said that Jan Zdenek, 82, was discovered at 2:30 p.m. in the water at the docks on West Avenue where he had been crabbing. People at the docks pulled him out of the water and tried to resuscitate him.

Zdenek was pronounced dead at South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore after being taken there by ambulance, police said.

His death is being investigated by the homicide squad, which police said is standard procedure in all drownings.
