Two people were killed in separate crashes in Suffolk ahead of the weekend, and two others were hospitalized, according to Suffolk County police. Both crashes occurred in the span of two hours.

One driver died after police said he ran a red light at the intersection of Carleton and East Suffolk avenues in Central Islip at 10:20 p.m. Friday. Joshua Perez-Rodriguez was heading north in a 2009 Honda Accord on Carleton Avenue when police said he failed to stop at a red light and hit a 2007 Toyota SUV traveling eastbound on East Suffolk Avenue. Perez-Rodriguez, 23, of Brentwood, was pronounced dead at South Shore University Hospital.

The driver in the SUV and a passenger were hospitalized for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks. Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the Third Squad at 631-854-8352.

Less than two hours later, at 12:05 a.m. Saturday, a driver was killed after hitting a tree in a yard in Ronkonkoma, police said.

The fatal crash unfolded as Milton Garcia drove a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe on Express Drive North and hit a street sign after veering off the roadway at the corner of Breeze Avenue. He continued driving across a resident’s grassy lawn on Express Drive North before slamming head-on into a tree.

Garcia, 45, of Huntington Station, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Chevrolet was impounded for a safety check. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to contact the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
