Investigation unearthed

A grand jury subpoena served April 21 asked the town to provide information pertaining to construction projects at Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood since June 1, 2013. Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood, seen on April 22, was temporarily closed April 23.

High levels of absestos

On May 6, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said at least one "unscrupulous contractor" was responsible for high levels of asbestos left in Roberto Clemente Park. Also, Joseph Montuori, the Islip Town parks commissioner, had been forced to resign.

Roberto Clemente Park remained closed as air monitors were installed May 9, 2014. Islip Town officials were told as early as November 2013 that dumping on a large scale was going on in the park, months after work began to improve soccer fields, Newsday reported May 11.

Asbestos found at 2nd site

Investigators found asbestos at a second site, at the corner of Islip Avenue and Sage Street in Central Islip, on May 13, 2014. Preliminary tests showed asbestos and debris "very, very similar" to that at Roberto Clemente Park, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said.

Town blames company for Roberto Clemente Park dumping

Debris at wetlands site

Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said on May 29, 2014, that debris found at a wetlands site on the Islip-Babylon border was dumped by the same people responsible for dumping at the park.

Veterans development contaminated

A development for veterans in Islandia is found to be contaminated with heavy metals, banned pesticides and petroleum-based products, officials said June 11, 2014.

Deer Park property contaminated

Soil samples taken from the rear of a Deer Park property that backs onto the wetlands site show asbestos and other toxic materials similar to those found at other contaminated sites in Islip, Spota said June 27, 2014.

Plan to remove debris

Islip gives the state its plan on Sept. 9, 2014, for removing the estimated 50,000 tons of dirt and debris strewn with toxins dumped at Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood, pictured on Sept. 23.

Additional monitoring needed

The state Department of Environmental Conservation says on Nov. 26, 2014, that Islip Town will have to drill additional wells to monitor the groundwater as it cleans up tens of thousands of tons of contaminated fill dumped at Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood, pictured here on Dec. 2, 2014.
