Long Island Rail Road commuters using the Bay Shore station and its parking lot can now access a parking permit application on the Town of Islip’s website.
The form asks for general user information, such as name and address, and also for vehicle information including the license plate number, make, model, year and color of the car to be used with the permit.
Payment sent by mail can be by check or money order — cash is not accepted by mail and will only be for in-person applications at the town’s parking administration office located at 401 Main St. in Islip.
Costs for a parking permit valid during 2016 can vary based on residency and time of purchase. According to the fee schedule on the application, residents who apply for a permit on or before Aug. 31 will pay $90, while nonresidents will pay $250. An earlier article printed in Newsday noted the nonresident fee at $200, due to incorrect information provided by the town. If a permit is purchased after Aug. 31, Islip resident fees drop to $30 and non-residents, $70. All permits are nontransferable and expire on Dec. 31, 2016, a town spokeswoman said.
Parking meters, the first at any LIRR lot in the town, will be in effect starting Jan. 4. Those without permits looking to use one of the 500 metered spaces can access one of five meter machines to be installed. Meter prices begin at 12 hours for $2, officials have said.
The town has spent $750,000 to purchase and install meters at three sites in Bay Shore — the Maple Avenue docks, which were turned on over the summer; the LIRR lot and a third expected phase for the downtown area along and around Main Street. Town officials have said the revenue is needed for upkeep of town-owned lots and to increase safety and security with improved lighting and added security cameras.
