LIE reopens following crash that seriously injured Bethpage woman, police say
A 53-year-old Bethpage woman was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, the result of a two-vehicle crash that closed a section of the westbound Long Island Expressway in Brookhaven for hours Thursday morning, Suffolk County police said.
The New York State Department of Transportation 511 NY website reported that following the 5:25 a.m. crash — which involved a car and a tractor trailer — all lanes of the westbound LIE were closed for more than four hours between Exit 68, William Floyd Parkway, and Exit 67, Yaphank Avenue, with traffic being diverted off the LIE at Exit 68. The road has since reopened, the DOT reported.
Police said the crash occured when a 2016 Kenwood tractor trailer was rear-ended by a 2015 Nissan after the truck stopped for delays through a construction zone.
The driver of the truck was not injured, police said.
Police said the Nissan was impounded for a safety check. Photos from the scene showed the front end of the car mangled from the impact.
The tractor trailer was inspected at the scene by officers from the Motor Carrier Safety Section, police said. No charges have been filed.
Police are asking anyone with information on the crash to contact Seventh Squad detectives at 631-852-8752.
