A Holbrook man was critically injured in a single-vehicle crash on the Long Island Expressway in Islandia on Sunday evening, Suffolk County police said.

The 27-year-old driver was heading west near Exit 58 when his two-door Nissan sports car left the roadway and struck a tree at 5:09 p.m., police said in a news release. The man was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition, according to police.

The westbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway were closed between Exits 57 and 58 for more than three hours after the crash while the eastbound lanes remained open, police said. All lanes were open as of about 8:15 p.m.

Fourth Squad detectives will continue to investigate the crash, police said. Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at 631-852-8452.
