New charges expected in wrong-way crash that killed cop
A Brooklyn man charged with drunken driving in a wrong-way crash on the Northern State Parkway that killed an NYPD officer on his way home from work is expected to face upgraded charges when he appears in court Tuesday, said a spokesman for the Suffolk district attorney's office.
Michael Bowen, 50, will be arraigned Tuesday on a grand jury indictment in Suffolk County Court, said DA spokesman Robert Clifford. He declined to comment further.
Bowen was arrested shortly after the Nov. 15 Dix Hills crash that killed NYPD officer and father of five Andre Menzies, 35, of North Babylon.
An attorney for Bowen could not be reached for comment Monday.
A grand jury last week indicted Bowen on 12 counts, including aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular manslaughter, manslaughter and other charges, online court records show.
If he is convicted of the top count, aggravated vehicular homicide, Bowen could face a maximum of 25 years in prison.
Bowen pleaded not guilty to driving while intoxicated at his arraignment Nov. 15 in First District Court in Central Islip.
He is being held without bail at Suffolk County jail pending his arraignment.
Authorities have said Menzies, a nine-year police veteran assigned to a housing command in Queens, was returning home shortly after midnight when his Honda was struck head-on by a Chevrolet Astro minivan driven by Bowen.
Bowen had made a U-turn in the eastbound lanes of the Northern State Parkway and was driving west when he struck Menzies, authorities said.
