New LIRR timetables include 'sundown' trains
New timetables for the Long Island Rail Road are in effect beginning next Monday and continuing through March 6, the commuter service said Monday in a news release.
Included in the new schedules are additional eastbound "sundown" trains on Fridays on the Port Washington and Far Rockaway branches for those who must be home before sundown for religious purposes.
Also, on weekday midday trains along the main line Oyster Bay, Huntington and Ronkonkoma branches, track work will lead to daily schedule adjustments of 1 to 3 minutes, the LIRR said.
The sundown service is in response to customer requests, the LIRR said, and will be offered on the Far Rockaway branch and, for the first time, on the Port Washington branch. The additional trains are for those passengers who must be home by sundown over the next few months - November through March - when sunset occurs earlier.
Here are some of the service changes in the new timetable, branch by branch:
Sundown service
Port Washington branch: A Friday-only train will run from Nov. 19 through early March, departing Penn Station at 3:18 p.m. and making local stops to Port Washington, arriving at 4:03 p.m.
Far Rockaway branch: Friday-only service resumes on the Far Rockaway branch on Nov. 19. Sundown service trains leave Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn at 2:35 p.m. and Penn Station at 2:39 p.m., connecting with the 3:04 p.m. train from Jamaica, arriving in Far Rockaway at 3:46 p.m.
Track work adjustments: Oyster Bay, Huntington, Ronkonkoma branches on weekdays, midday trains are adjusted 1 to 3 minutes to accommodate track work on the main line between Merillon Avenue and Carle Place.
