A linen fire damaged a laundry room at the Thatched Cottage Caterers in Centerport on Tuesday, fire officials said.

The fire was reported at 11:52 p.m. and volunteers from the Centerport and Greenlawn fire departments responded to the scene on East Main Street.

Officials said the first firefighters to arrive entered the premises and found what was described as "a heavy smoke condition" inside the building.

The fire involved linens and rags that were in a laundry room in the building's lower level, officials said, and was extinguished by the sprinkler system. The area was then thoroughly examined by Centerport firefighters, who used fans to clear the smoke.

Fire damage was confined to the room, officials said.

More than three dozen firefighters from Centerport and Greenlawn were on the scene, bringing a total of three engines, a ladder truck, a heavy rescue truck and two ambulances.

The Suffolk County police Arson Squad and Town of Huntington Fire Marshal are investigating the cause of the fire.
