Single-engine plane lands in field adjacent to Brookhaven Calabro Airport
Four people avoided injury Saturday after the single-engine airplane they were traveling in landed in a field in Shirley, officials said.
The Mastic Fire Department responded to the corner of Sunset Drive and Forrest Avenue shortly before 4 p.m. to a report of a crash, according to chief Steve Januszkiewicz.
"They ended up going through the fence and landing in a field adjacent to the property there," at Brookhaven Calabro Airport, he said. "Everybody was out, there were four occupants, they all walked out with no injuries."
A spokesperson for the Suffolk County Police Department confirmed a report of a plane crash at 3:53 p.m., but did not provide details of what happened or identify the pilot.
It’s unclear whether the plane was taking off or landing at Calabro Airport. The aircraft is registered to a company in Patchogue, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
In a statement Saturday, FAA officials confirmed the single-engine Piper PA-24 landed in the field with four people on board. The agency is investigating the incident, officials said.
Januszkiewicz said about 25 volunteers from the fire department and Mastic Ambulance responded to the call with two fire engines. Responders worked to contain a small fuel spill, he said.
"We just confirmed that the power was shut off and that the fuel lines were shut down," he said.
The two-runway airport is maintained by Brookhaven Town’s Division of General Aviation, and has more than 50,000 takeoffs and landings each year, according to the town’s website.
