Suffolk cop saves man from heroin overdose

A police officer responding to a 911 call late Monday reporting an unconscious man lying in the street in Mastic saved the life of a 23-year-old who had overdosed on heroin.

The identity of the victim was not released.

Suffolk County police said the incident occurred at 10:10 p.m. on Poncho Drive.

Police said the cop, Seventh Precinct Police Officer Michael Rebentisch, revived the man by administering a dose of intranasal Narcan. The man's girlfriend had told the officer the man had used heroin.

After being revived police said the victim was taken by Manorville Community Ambulance to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue. His condition was not immediately known.

Officers in all Suffolk precincts, as well as the Marine Bureau and the Emergency Service Section, have been equipped with intranasal Narcan as part of a statewide pilot program conducted by the state Department of Health. Narcan reverses the potentially deadly effects of heroin and prescription painkillers such as oxycodone and Vicodin.
