Boy, 2, dies, days after being found unconcious in North Haven backyard pool
A 2-year-old boy found Sunday floating unconscious in a North Haven pool died Thursday, the Southampton Town Police said.
The toddler was found about 12:30 p.m. in the backyard pool of a residence on Sunset Beach Road, authorities said.
Southampton Town Police, Sag Harbor Village Police and Sag Harbor EMS responded to the scene and performed CPR on the child.
The toddler was transported to Southampton Hospital and later transferred for further treatment to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he died, police said.
Southampton Town Police spokesman Todd Spencer confirmed the death of the child Thursday evening.
Drownings are now the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 nationwide and the second-leading cause of death for kids ages 5 to 14, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
New York State broke its record in 2021, with more than 230 drownings, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul.
On July 3, a 2-year-old boy died after being pulled unresponsive from a residential pool in Islandia, Suffolk County police said.
Then on July 4, a 7-year-old boy died after being pulled out of a pool in East Meadow, Nassau police said.
An hour later, Suffolk police raced to a home in East Northport and pulled an unresponsive man from a residential pool. The 79-year-old man died, police said.
In the early morning hours of July 5, Suffolk police pulled a 29-year-old man from a pool in Wyandanch. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
And, on July 7, a 2-year-old boy was pulled unresponsive from a residential swimming pool in Deer Park. The toddler survived.
