Suffolk County police are investigating a hit-and-run accident Friday morning that killed a construction worker in Fort Salonga, a police spokesman said.
Victor Schultz, 49, of Massapequa, died after being struck by a vehicle at about 1:35 a.m., Fourth Squad detectives said.
Schultz and a co-worker from Intercounty Paving of Hicksville were loading a milling machine onto a trailer on the side of Fort Salonga Road, or Route 25A, near Sunken Meadow Parkway, when Schultz was struck by a vehicle, police said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The co-worker was not injured.
A spokeswoman for the paving company said she had been instructed by superiors not to comment.
Police said witnesses told them a dark-colored sport utility vehicle traveling west on Route 25A left the scene without stopping.
Det. Sgt. John Twiname declined to say exactly what witnesses told police, however, he said "we have physical evidence matching that type of vehicle" to the crime scene.
Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-8477, or the Fourth Squad, 631-854-8452. All calls will be kept confidential.
