Five state roads across Long Island will be repaved in the next two years, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Friday.

The $18.3 million project, funded through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that President Joe Biden signed into law in 2021, will pour 2 inches of new asphalt atop 60 lane miles of road surfaces throughout Suffolk and Nassau counties, according to a news release from the governor's office.

Hochul touted the forthcoming construction as part of a continued investment of more than $250 million to renew approximately 850 miles of state roads across Long Island.

“With every investment we make in our infrastructure, we are enhancing public safety and providing a better quality of life for people across Long Island,” Hochul said in the news release.

“Since day one, I have prioritized improving the durability of Long Island highways — we’ve seen the results already from the Long Island Expressway to the Northern State Parkway — and these projects continue our commitment to safe transportation for all,” she said.

In Suffolk workers will repave portions of Robert Moses Causeway between Montauk Highway and Ocean Parkway in Islip, Veterans Memorial Highway between Jericho Turnpike and Old Willets Path in Smithtown, and Middle Country Road between Patchogue-Mount Sinai Road and Mount Sinai-Coram Road in Brookhaven. This construction is expected to begin next month and should be completed by the end of the year.

Next year, construction crews will start and finish paving projects on portions of two roadways in Hempstead: Meadowbrook State Parkway between Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road, and Newbridge Road between Jerusalem Avenue and Hempstead Turnpike.

“I’ve been on those roads and they do need repair,” Assemb. David G. McDonough (R-Merrick), who sits on the Standing Committee on Transportation, said in an interview. The assemblyman noted the common issue plaguing the five roadways is “rough pavement.”

According to the release, most of the construction will occur during off-peak hours. Workers will also upgrade 130 sidewalk curb ramps along the stretches of Veterans Memorial Highway, Middle Country Road, Meadowbrook State Parkway and Newbridge Road slated for repaving so they comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
