Weakened post tropical cyclone Helene is bringing light showers to the area this weekend, according to forecasters.

Downgraded since it hit Florida’s Big Bend as a Category 4 hurricane late Thursday, the center of Helene on Saturday morning remains over western Kentucky but remnants are pushing moisture onto Long Island. The rain will continue through Saturday before tapering off early Sunday afternoon, according to Bryan Ramsey, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton.

"We lack the energy from the core of the storm, which is very far away," Ramsey said.

Weekend temperatures are expected to be close to average for this time of year, according to the NWS. On Saturday, temperatures will hit 71 before dropping to 59 in the evening. Sunday will be slightly cooler with a high of 67 and a low of 51.

There is chance for more rain on Monday and Tuesday with a coastal low threatening to bring some more wet weather, Ramsey said.

Temperatures for the beginning of the workweek through Wednesday will be in the low 70s to high 60s during the day and drop into the high 50s at night.
