$355G raised for Asharoken Village Hall work

More than $355,000 has been raised by a private group for Asharoken’s Village Hall project.

The Asharoken Fundraising Building Committee gave the board 10 checks totaling $52,520.

Since superstorm Sandy, the committee has raised $80,610. Mayor Gregory Letica announced the figures at Tuesday’s board of trustees meeting.

Sandy has accelerated the reconstruction project, after the current building was flooded and left unusable.

Village business is being run out of a trailer, and the police department is housed in a second trailer, both sitting in the Village Hall parking lot. Before Sandy struck on Oct. 29, the village already was in the middle of planning for a new hall almost double its current size.

Letica said in an email Wednesday that he could not give an estimate of the project’s cost.

“We are working on drawings that can be sent out for preliminary construction estimates,” he said.

He said village officials also are considering modular construction.

A committee of six residents has been working on the project, he has said.
