The second story of a Bronx house under construction

collapsed Friday, sending dozens of 70-pound cement blocks crashing below and

injuring six workers, two seriously.

The workers, who were standing beside the blocks and heavy scaffolding

equipment, fell at least 10 feet and then crashed through another floor in the

accident at Southern Boulevard and Fairmont Place in the Tremont section.

"The second floor came into the first floor," said a worker at the scene,

who did not want to be identified. "All we heard was a loud crash."

Another worker said he was standing on the first floor when he heard the

sound of metal ties popping. He managed to escape unharmed.

Officials with the city Department of Buildings and the federal

Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the accident.

A spokeswoman for Jacobi Medical Center said two workers were in stable

condition with multiple trauma. The others were treated and released.

A firefighter whose back was injured was treated at Jacobi and released.
