Babylon Town gets check for Overlook Beach 9/11 memorial
At Thursday’s Town of Babylon board meeting, Laura Doyle from Star Fight Promotions presented the board with a check for $1,800 that was raised from a kickboxing event called “Battle at the Beach 2,” held at Overlook Beach on Sept. 12.
The money will be used for upkeep on the town’s 9/11 Hometown Memorial at Overlook Beach.
Ralph Ascoli, the 9/11 Hometown Memorial family coordinator, was on hand to accept the check. Ascoli, of North Babylon, lost his daughter Debra Mannetta during the 9/11 attacks. Choking up as he accepted the check, Ascoli said maintenance of the memorial was important “so that we can honor our loved ones.”
Those on hand for the donation Thursday night are, from left, Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, Town Clerk Carol Quirk, Councilwoman Ellen McVeety, Ralph Ascoli, Laura Doyle, Supervisor Steve Bellone, Councilman Lindsay Henry, Councilman Tony Martinez. (Nov. 4, 2010)
