Calendar quirk creates long recycling wait in Town of Riverhead

Because of a quirk in the calendar, there will be no recycling pickups in Riverhead until next year — Jan. 8 for paper and cardboard, and Jan. 15 for plastic and metals.
Both Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 are holidays on the town pickup schedule, and pickup for regular garbage on those days will be put off for one day.
Town Sanitation supervisor John Reeve said the last time recycling was put off for so long was in 2002, when Christmas and New Year’s Day both fell on Wednesdays.
Correction: Riverhead recycling collection was canceled for Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. Regular garbage collection will not be affected. A story yesterday was incorrect.
