John Crawley systematically studied and dismantled Farmingdale's zone defense. Port Washington goalie Nick Ferrero had a coach and teammates shoot against him twice Wednesday afternoon before the game. Coach Tom Rooney made sure to watch the Dalers play "a few times."

You could say that Port Washington was prepared for its Conference I matchup. It's no wonder, then, that all those crossed Ts and dotted Is turned into a big, old W.

"All week in practice, we prepared for every situation they could put us in," Crawley said after the Vikings' 10-5 victory. "And when we're prepared as a team and everything is working, and everyone is having fun playing, you can't stop us."

Port Washington (4-1) dominated in almost every facet of the game, and held Farmingdale to only one goal for the first three quarters. And even when faced with things they couldn't prepare for -- say, the Dalers rotating cadre of faceoff men -- the Vikings were up to the challenge.

Joey Frocarro won 14 of 18 faceoffs and, "even though they tried a lot of different guys and tried to slow him up in a lot of different ways, he's just very good on the X," Rooney said.

Farmingdale (3-2) drew to within 3-1 on Tom Kennedy's goal with 6:52 left in the half, but the next three attempts, including a fastbreak off a Vikings turnover with nine minutes left in the third, were thwarted by Ferrero, a standout freshman that Frocarro called "one of the best goalies in the county."

Port Washington outscored Farmingdale 3-0 in the third, behind two goals from Crawley, who finished with four. His prettiest by far came with 7:30 left in the quarter when, with his back to a defender, he spun around and scored with a slick underhand shot that snuck past the head-side of the goalie. Meanwhile, Jesse Kaplan paced the stingy defense.

Richard Greenberg's goal off a Derek Caruso assist gave the Vikings an 8-1 lead with 9:45 left. Farmingdale scored four times in the final 7:36, but goals by Caruso and Crawley assured it wouldn't be nearly enough.

"Farmingdale likes to invert the middies behind and we just tried to take it away early," Rooney said. "We had a game-plan and we executed it well."
