Suffolk gets monkeypox vaccine to be given in 14 clinics by 3 providers

Clinics in Patchogue and Brentwood are to begin offering the scarce vaccine used against monkeypox later this week, in addition to other Suffolk locations such as Bay Shore, Hampton Bays and Fire Island, County Executive Steve Bellone's office said Monday.
The county received 4,080 vials of the vaccine, his office said, and the shots are being given by private providers Northwell Health, Stony Brook Medicine and Sun River Health.
Those who qualify — including men who have sex with multiple or anonymous male sex partners — can find appointments at www.suffolkcountyny.gov/monkeypox.
There is a global shortage of the Jynneos vaccine, and the state is getting vaccines from the federal government, to be distributed to localities.
New York, which has declared a state of emergency over the outbreak, leads the nation with monkeypox cases — 1,960 as of Monday, according to the state Health Department's monkeypox website, with 1,831, in New York City residents. Suffolk has had 25 infected residents, and Nassau 14, the website says.
In the current outbreak — outside of Africa, where monkeypox is endemic — about 98% of cases have been in men who have sex with men.
The vaccine is given in two doses — the second dose four weeks after the first — and takes six weeks after that final dose to take full effect.
