Hempstead’s town board will hold a Sept. 3 hearing on a proposal to bring resident-restricted parking to East Meadow neighborhoods around Nassau University Medical Center.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed a law last week that allows the town to create a residents-only parking-permit district in the area where, residents say, streets are clogged by cars parked by hospital employees and patients.

The law enables Hempstead officials to put up signs and issue permits, but the town must first hold a public hearing, town officials have said.

Supporters of the law have said the restriction should apply to Jefferson, First and Second streets, and Roosevelt, Lincoln and Franklin avenues — all of which are south of Hempstead Turnpike and a few blocks from the hospital. The bill allows for those streets and several others located south, east and west of the hospital to be restricted to permit holders.
