Hempstead Town building design review board named
The Hempstead Town Board passed a resolution Tuesday appointing John Rottkamp, Louis Carnovale and Raymond Schwarz — all building department employees — as members of the design review board. Rottkamp is the building commissioner, Carnovale is a building plan examiner and Schwarz is a supervisor of inspection services. They will not receive any additional compensation beyond their salaries, town spokesman Mike Deery said.
Under the rezoning plan approved by the town board in April, a 2-mile stretch of Elmont’s Hempstead Turnpike corridor — from the Queens line to Franklin Square — was rezoned into four subdistricts with specific uses, building height requirements, and design and parking guidelines. The town board created the review panel and included aesthetic requirements.
The design review board’s duty is to respond to building department applications that are submitted for new development within the zone. Approval from the members of the board will be necessary before sign permits or building permits are issued, Deery said.
