LIRR train in Freeport fatally strikes man, officials say

A 40-year-old man struck by a Long Island Rail Road train Sunday at the Freeport station has died, an MTA official said, despite the efforts of firefighters who tended to him while he was under the train.

LIRR spokesman Aaron Donovan said Sunday he did not know the identity of the victim, who died at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow.

Donovan said the train that hit the man departed Babylon at 7:28 a.m. and was due at Penn Station in Manhattan at 8:44 a.m.

Freeport Fire Department executive director Ray Maguire said in a statement that firefighters responded and found the victim under the train.

Lt. Kevin Etter, Lt. Donald Rowan Jr., Ex-Capt. Scott Braun, Firefighter Steve Scrivano and Capt. Ralph Saint Eloi were able to get under the train, where they determined the victim was still alive, and they administered care, Maguire said.

“Firefighters were forced to operate in a prone position due to the limited space under the train. They packaged and maneuvered the victim under and up and onto the station platform,” and he was taken to the hospital, Maguire said in a statement.

“The firefighters operated in a difficult environment with limited space to maneuver. Although the victim eventually succumbed to his catastrophic injuries, the efforts put forth by our firefighters was incredible,” Maguire said.
