While students cheered from the stands, Devin Zacchino and his fellow junior boy’s powder-puff cheerleading group concluded their dance to Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” by shaking their backsides, swiveling their hips and waving their ring fingers back and forth.

On Friday, they were among 800 students in Mount Sinai High School’s gymnasium to celebrate the school’s homecoming pep rally, which has been a tradition since 1994. As soon as it began, the senior class pulled out cans of Silly String and sprayed each other.

“Everyone comes together for homecoming,” said Zacchino, 16. “We had a lot of fun. We got a lot of laughs. We’re horrible dancers, but that’s the funny part. The worse you are, the more the better.”

The juniors had less than a week to practice the dance. Following their performance, the senior boy’s powder-puff cheerleading group took the spotlight, waving their arms in the air to Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop.”

The celebrations came to end with the crowning of the king and queen. Wearing paint across their cheeks, Silvestro Crino, 17, and cheerleading captain Alexa Signorile, 17, were crowned king and queen in the center of the gymnasium.

“It’s our senior year and we were waiting for this all summer,” Crino said. “Homecoming is crazy with all the Silly String, cheering and I just can’t believe how much fun this was.”

The school’s homecoming football game against Center Moriches is on Saturday at 2 p.m., with the school’s parade starting at 12:30 p.m.
