Nassau police add cameras to ShotSpotter system in Roosevelt, Hempstead

The Nassau County Police Department is making changes to help deter gun violence.
The ShotSpotter system, which uses sensors to alert police to the sound of gunshots, will feature cameras to try and catch potential suspects. The improvements are being put in place in the Roosevelt and Hempstead areas.
The new system will include sensors that have cameras attached that pivot and zoom in.
Police say communities are safer thanks to the anti-crime technology, adding that cameras will only strengthen their efforts.
The New York Civil Liberties Union expressed concerns over how long the videos will remain available, but Nassau police insist that all footage can be subpoenaed by any law enforcement agency for up to six months.
