Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer Thursday backed the Bloomberg administration's plan to rezone midtown east to allow for modern skyscrapers.

Stringer's support was in part based on Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Daily News op-ed that the city will put up a "significant portion" of the money for transit and open-space projects. "Greater density in east midtown should follow significant investments in its infrastructure," Stringer said.

Developers would pay for pedestrian and transit projects, but community groups felt nearby infrastructure was already in need of improvement without adding density to the area.
