'Central Park 5' calling for justice 22 years later

On the anniversary of the horrific 1989 Central Park Jogger rape that rocked the city, the five men convicted, imprisoned then later cleared of the crime yesterday renewed their call for justice on the steps of City Hall.

“My life was stolen from me,” said Raymond Santana, one of the five men, according to CBSNewYork. “And so now as a 36-year-old man going on 37, who would have a stable career with his own apartment, own car, a family … I don’t have any of that.”

Santana and the four others were given sentences of between six and 16 years, but were cleared in 2002 when the actual rapist confessed.

A year later the five men sued the city for $50 million each. The case still drags on today, though it may finally start this summer.

The city said yesterday it stands by the “decisions made by the detectives and prosecutors in bringing this case.”
