Coors removes Puerto Rican Day parade themed beer cans
The MillerCoors brewing company will remove the Puerto Rican flag from novelty cans of its beer following outrage from the city's Latino community.
The Coors Lite cans were meant to celebrate the June 9 Puerto Rican Day parade. However, some Latinos, such as Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito, said the promotion commercialized their culture.
"Today's announcement that Coors will cease all production of products bearing the Puerto Rican flag is yet another incredible victory for our community," she said in a statement Thursday.
The beer company, which didn't return messages requesting comment, was in hot water for a previous Puerto Rican Day promotion, two years ago. The company removed posters that had the statement "Emborícuate," which means "become Puerto Rican," after community members said that was trying to be a pun for a Spanish term for getting drunk.
