So what’s it like to “tackle” just about everything in entertainment?
Just take a look at actress Bree Turner’s diverse resume. From appearing in movies like “The Wedding Planner” with Jennifer Lopez and “Just My Luck” with Lindsay Lohan to dancing in a halftime Budweiser commercial, Turner has a great acting career. The daughter of former Giants linebacker Kevin Turner has also tackled being a wife and mother of two.
These days you can spot Turner starring as Rosalee Calvert in NBC’s “Grimm,” a drama series inspired by the Grimm Brothers’ Fairy Tales that chronicles the efforts of Portland, Ore., homicide detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli)to balance his detective responsibilities with his ability to see supernatural creatures. Turner plays a reformed Grimm creature who serves as Burkhardt’s confidant. She is an apothecary Fuchsbau who returns to Portland after her brother’s death to run his shop.
We spoke with Turner about her own fairy-tale life and her secret love affair with New York.
When did you first come to New York? My dad, Kevin Turner, was a linebacker for the New York Giants and Washington Redskins, so we spent some time here when I was younger.
Why do you really love New York? I came to New York to dance and follow my dream, and I met my husband, who was a resident at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital. Now he’s an orthopedic surgeon at Cedar Sinai.
What are your favorite New York haunts? Lincoln Center, where my husband proposed, and the Upper West Side, where my husband lived. I love Central Park, which is the center of the city, where you see all walks of life.
What are your favorite restaurants? L’Esquina and the bar Pianos on the Lower East Side.
Where did you train as a dancer? I came to New York as a dancer and took classes at Broadway Dance. I was obsessed with Robert Fosse. There were so many famous dancers who were actually teaching there. I honestly wanted to attend Alvin Ailey after high school, but my choices were [to either] live in a tenement and pursue dance in New York or attend UCLA to study dance and be closer to my family.
What is your most special memory of New York? It’s a New York fairy-tale that I moved to the city for dance and I met my husband.
What’s your latest splurge? I just went to Barney’s and bought a winter coat that I’ll never wear in L.A.
Do you have any advice that you can offer to young actors, actresses and dancers? I credit my dancing for the focus I put forth toward acting. While studying theater at King’s College in London and enrolling in a series of acting classes with some of the best teachers, I pursued my love, even if it wasn’t with Alvin Ailey. Now, I am an actress, went to school and followed my dreams. I’m doing what I love. Stay your course.
