Students come from all over the world to attend college in New York City, and with good reason.

Reputable and prestigious schools exist throughout the five boroughs, ranging from a large ivy league institution like Columbia University, to the multiple campuses within the City University of New York (CUNY) to a small, liberal arts college like St. Francis. Whether students are planning on majoring in business, theater or liberal arts, there’s a school for everyone.

One major that is popular at most of the local colleges is psychology.

“Psychology is applicable to a wide range of fields, including business, advertising and the health fields,” explains Dr. Jennifer Lancaster, the chair of the psychology department at St. Francis College, located in Brooklyn Heights.

It’s also a common major for people who go on to become social workers, occupational therapists and teachers, in addition to those that go on to attend medical school and law school.

One aspect of St. Francis’ psychology department that sets it apart from other programs is the requirement that students conduct their own experimental research project, from start to finish.

“Students have to do their own original research project and many take the projects to conferences,” says Lancaster.

Another standout feature is the combined BA/MA program, where majors graduate with a combined degree after five years.

However, psychology is just one of a variety of popular majors offered by local colleges.
