Knickerbiker: Gift ideas for bike commuters
H?ere are a few gifts that most bike commuters will find useful this time of year. While some of these items are basic — and probably already possessed in some form by the grizzled rider in your life — your beloved biker will be delighted to have a spare.
Crane Suzu Brass Bicycle Bell, $13
Besides the panicked voice of a cyclist who sees trouble ahead, nothing says “heads up!” like the clarion ring of this classic-looking bell.
Firm Grip Extreme gloves, $14.97
I picked up these goat-skin numbers during a spree at Home Depot that was in no other way harmful to goats. Best for milder winter days, these tight-fitting gloves — intended to absorb tool vibrations — sleekly enhance handlebar grip. Isotoner's cashmere-lined leather gloves (about $30) are great for colder days and and double as everyday winter hand protection.
Giro Surface helmet, $50
Typical, aerodynamic bike helmets this time of year allow frigid air to rush over cyclists’ domes during bridge descents. This skater-style option from Giro, available in 11 colors, protects and serves. Throw in this Gore Bike Wear Helmet IV Cap ($26.99) to seal in more heat.
Caterpillar Digger clear safety glasses, $14.50
Commuters who inevitably ride in the dark, gusty cold will appreciate the anti-fog coating on this eyewear, as well as the knowledge that you didn’t blow $100 more on swappable-lens shades from Oakley.
Wahl Groomsman Beard and Mustache Trimmer, $20
A not-so-subtle suggestion to grow a protective winter beard, or to tame the one that's already appeared.
Note: Manhattan shops NYC Velo and Bicycle Habitat have assembled some useful gift selections.
