A Skansa rendering of the 7 train extension to Hudson Yards

Construction on two of the MTA’s mega-projects is rolling along.

Work will begin this month on the last major contract to finish the No. 7 train’s extension from Times Square to West 34th Street, and for the Second Avenue subway’s 86th Street station. Contractor Skanska will be responsible for both projects, the MTA announced last week.

The No. 7 train extension should be done by December 2013. While the MTA says the Second Avenue subway’s first riders will board in December 2016, the Federal Transit Administration estimates it will be done by February 2018.

The Second Avenue Subway contract is for $301 million. The No. 7 train extension is for $513.7 million.

Both are joint partnerships with Skanska and other contractors, though Skanska is doing the bulk of the work.
