Time Magazine highlights NYC companies in top 10 tech start-up list

As New York City's Silicon Alley contines to grow, Time magazine released its new list of top 10 tech start-ups to watch on Thursday.

"Each year, the temperature of NYC's start-up scene seems to get turned up another five degrees, with 2013 yielding by far the largest number and widest spectrum of companies for our judging committee to consider," Time Inc.'s Style & Entertainment Group editor Mark Golin said in a statement.

The 2013 list highlights city-based companies that are transforming the way people date, workout and connect online.

Erica Bell, one of the co-founders of the online shopping platform Hukkster, which was included in the list, said the city was a natural spot for their headquarters.

"Our conversations with retailers come so easily being in New York, as much as we might like the weather in California," Bell said.

Doug Imbruce, founder and CEO of video software company Qwiki, also said the city was integral to his company's success.

"Qwiki is a unique combination of art and science," Imbruce said "The energy and diversity of NYC are key to maintaining this careful balance."

"Silicon Valley is great, but New York is thriving and we want to be part of a rising tide," said Klooff CEO and co-founder Alejandro Russo.
