The quiet residential Village of Poquott (population 994 in 2009), held a regular board meeting last Thursday.

The community, which has grown from a summer vacation spot splashed with bungalows, has 371 homes, most with year-round residents, said Village Clerk Eileen Harvey, who has lived in the village for 57 years.

Here’s a rundown of items discussed at the meeting:

* Salvatore Alessi was named building inspector, replacing the retiring Insp. Joseph Arico, who will stay on a month to get Alessi up to speed.

* Steve’s Path, a path to the village’s residents-only beach in Port Jefferson Harbor, has been closed for the winter. “We do it for safety,” Harvey said.

* The village’s environmental commissioner attended an energency-response drill with National Grid, which has a plant in Port Jefferson that adjoins the village. “We wanted to be included in their plans,” Harvey said.

* The village is updating its master plan, which includes assessing the need for roads. Poquott has no business district, so residents usually head to nearby Setauket or Port Jefferson. The village shares a ZIP code with East Setauket.

“We’re very quiet. It’s a well-kept secret. It’s a lovely place,” Harvey said.

The next board meeting is Jan. 13 at Village Hall.
