X-rays, pill bottles, fertilizers, computers, batteries and even gently-used clothing are welcome at the Town of North Hempstead’s last household and harmful products collection event of the year on Sunday.

The Stop Throwing Out Pollutants, or STOP, event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the town’s Solid Waste Management Authority building at 802 W. Shore Rd. in Port Washington.

STOP events in the past have been solely for the collection of household products, such as aerosols, cleaners, pesticides and oil-based paints that, if improperly disposed of, could harm the environment.

Over-the-counter and prescription drugs, as well as electronic waste, were added later.

And now, through a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters, people can drop off gently used clothing that can be donated to thrift stores or recycled.

To protect against identity theft, paper documents, CDs, DVDs, discs, pill bottles and credit cards will be shredded and shipped to pulping mills across the country.

For more information about the STOP event, call the town’s hotline at 311 from within the town and 516-869-6311 from outside town boundaries.
