Heavy rains are expected to subside for the weekend after a flood watch for parts of Long Island was canceled Friday afternoon.
Showers may continue through the evening Friday before clearing by Saturday and Sunday. There remained about an 80% chance of rain Friday, decreasing with showers possible until 11 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
Meteorologists canceled the flood watch about 3 p.m. Friday, after it was initially issued through 1 a.m. It appeared the worst of the heavy downpours from Friday morning were over, forecasters said.
The forecast called for a near perfect weekend ahead of Mother's Day. Clear, sunny skies were predicted Saturday and Sunday with high temperatures in the low to mid-70s and overnight lows remaining in the 50s.
Saturday could be slightly breezy, with winds forecast between 15 to 20 mph. Sunday, Mother's Day, will also see temperatures in the 70s with calm winds, according to the weather service.
The nice, spring weather is expected to continue until the next chance of rain arriving Tuesday night. Temperatures are expected to remain in the 70s through the week with about a 50% chance of showers Wednesday.
