Long Island weather: Mostly cloudy skies but warm for Groundhog Day
With the sun expected to mostly stay hidden behind clouds, Long Island's groundhogs on Sunday, Groundhog Day, may have a hard time seeing any shadows as they try to predict whether there will be six more weeks of winter, but at least the prognosticating rodents should stay relatively warm.
The National Weather Service forecast for Sunday on the Island calls for mostly cloudy skies, with a high temperature near 46 degrees. Winds are expected be out of the west at 6 to 11 mph.
Sunday night, there is a 30% chance of showers, mainly between 9 p.m. and midnight, before the clouds start to clear. The temperature should be about 41 degrees.
"A few rain and snow showers are ... possible Sunday and Sunday night as a weak upper level disturbance passes through," the National Service said in its regional summary Saturday afternoon.
Long Islanders heading back to work or school on Monday are expected to be greeted with springlike weather as the high temperature is expected to rise Monday to 52 degrees under sunny skies.
Tuesday should be mostly cloudy, and only about 4 degrees cooler.
The rest of the workweek is expected to be wet. The weather service predicts a 50% chance of rain on Wednesday with a high temperature of 47 degrees, and a 70% chance of rain on Thursday with a high temperature of 46. The forecast calls for a 50% chance of rain Friday and a high temperature near 49.
The weather service's early word on how weekend starts looks pretty good: Saturday is expected to be partly sunny with a high near 46.
