Forecast: Rain, wind from Florence's remnants arrive Monday night on LI
The remnants of tropical depression Florence are expected to bring rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds to Long Island starting Monday night, the National Weather Service said Sunday.
Monday and Tuesday's forecasts will be "warm and humid" with highs in the 80s, with the rain beginning on Monday night, said Jay Engle, a meteorologist in the weather service's Upton station.
"Right now it looks a 1 to 2 inch rainfall, but those amounts could go up or down," Engle said.
Florence — which is moving north from the Carolinas — has been downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical depression and as it travels across our region could produce minor flooding, forecasters said.
"By the time it comes up here, it doesn't have nearly as much rain," he said of the storm which was a Category 4 over the ocean, then a Category 1 as it made landfall down South. "By the time it comes up here, it's not the same animal."
On Wednesday and Thursday, the area is expected to dry out and trend cooler, with highs in the 70s. The weather service forecasts a slight chance of rain by the end of the week and temperatures lower than usual by the weekend.
Friday should bring mostly sunny skies with a high of 78 and a low of 64, with a 30 percent chance of rain at night. Saturday, the first day of fall, is expected to be sunny with a high of 72.
