Forecasters: Strong thunderstorms, winds, flooding possible on Long Island 

Long Island is expected to see warm temperatures and a chance of severe thunderstorms through Monday night, which could bring strong winds, large hail and a slight chance of flooding.

There is about a 40% chance of storms for most of the Island, with the potential for some severe storms through Monday evening, according to the National Weather Service. Meteorologists said the storms could dump about an inch of rain per hour in places. 

Forecasters warned the heavy rain could lead to flooding in areas with poor drainage, with the possibility of isolated flash floods, particularly on Eastern Long Island and in Southern Connecticut.

Storms could get worse Monday night, with the potential for damaging winds in excess of 58 mph and hail. The forecast has a slight risk for severe storms for most of Long Island, including areas in Suffolk County that were recently damaged by flash floods that prompted President Joe Biden and Gov. Kathy Hochul to issue declarations of emergency from storm damage.

High temperatures are forecast in the 80s, but with humidity, temperatures could feel like they’re in the 90s, particularly in Nassau County and northern Suffolk County, forecasters said.

Patchy fog could roll in overnight but should clear by 8 a.m. Tuesday. The rest of the day is expected to be clear and mostly sunny, with a high near 83. The potential for showers and thunderstorms may return Wednesday, according to the forecast.
