Long Islanders can expect a stifling combination of high temperatures and humidity this week until showers arrive to bring cooling relief just before the holiday weekend, the National Weather Service said.
A heat advisory will remain in effect Tuesday and Wednesday for Nassau and northern Suffolk counties, ending at 8 p.m. Wednesday, said Dave Radell, a meteorologist with the weather service.
Temperatures Monday reached into the high 80s in some parts of Long island, with the heat index making it feel like the low 90s, but expect Tuesday and Wednesday to be even hotter.
"The next two days look to be the warmest and most humid feeling that we’ve experienced," Radell said of Tuesday and Wednesday, although he said heat records are not forecast to be broken.
While temperatures are expected to be in the 90s those days, the Island is not forecast to have a heat wave, in contrast to New York City and part of New Jersey, the weather service reported.
A heat wave is three consecutive days of 90-degree temperatures or above.
Although there are outside chances of showers or storms Tuesday and Wednesday, the most likely reprieve from the warm weather will be Thursday afternoon. Radell said showers and storms arrive then and temperatures will reach the mid to upper 80s before going down further to 70s Thursday night into Friday.
Nassau County, Brookhaven town and the Town of Hempstead have all announced extended hours in municipal beaches and pools and the opening of cooling centers. Check with local towns for hours and details.
The temperatures on the Island and in New York City don’t compare to the record-breaking heat in the Pacific Northwest. "It’s a just a coincidence that you got both coasts right now that are experiencing these sort of anomalous and certainly for the case out west, record-setting heat," Radell said, adding that the air mass is different in the Pacific northwest than in the East coast. "For us, it’s not record-setting."
Heat stroke, heat cramps, or heat exhaustion are possible dangers in these conditions, especially with prolonged time outside, the weather service reports.
In Suffolk, Brookhaven Town will extend the hours at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai, West Meadow Beach in Stony Brook and Corey Beach in Blue Point. Lifeguards will be on duty from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The town’s Holtsville and Centereach pools will also be open the same hours.
In Nassau, County Executive Laura Curran announced Monday the opening of cooling centers at Cantiague Park at 480 West John Street, Hicksville; Mitchel Field at 1 Charles Lindbergh Boulevard, Uniondale; and Wantagh Park, 1 King Road, Wantagh. The center at Cantiague will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., while the other two sites are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Meanwhile, Town of Hempstead Supervisor Donald Clavin announced the opening of cooling centers, which will remain open from Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., as follows: the Baldwin Senior Center, Bellmore Senior Center, Franklin Square Senior Center, Green Acres Senior Center, Levittown Senior Center, Salisbury-East Meadow Senior Center, Uniondale-Hempstead Senior Center, Uniondale-Merrick Senior Center and the Wantagh Senior Center.
Clavin also announced extended hours at town pools and beaches in an effort to help local residents "beat the heat" and stay safe during the heat wave.
Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced cooling centers at Marjorie Post Park on Unqua Road, Massapequa, and the Syosset-Woodbury Community Center on Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury, would be open Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. The town also has extended hours at all pools until 8 p.m. daily through Sunday, July 4, Saladino said. Pools open at 11 a.m.
