Cloudy skies are expected to continue to cloak Long Island on Sunday with fog and rain predicted through the middle of next week, according to the National Weather Service.

Amid fog and occasional light rain Saturday, the temperature topped out at 76 degrees just before 2 p.m. in Islip, according to the weather service.

Sunday is expected to be foggy with a high of 74; rain could return in the evening as "another low-pressure system that passes to our south from Sunday night into Monday," weather service meteorologist Bryan Ramsey said.

The average high for June 8 in Islip is 75 degrees.

The weather service issued a high-risk rip current warning Saturday through Sunday evening for South Shore beaches. The National Ocean Service describes rip currents as "powerful, narrow channels of fast-moving water" that can sweep beachgoers away from the shoreline.

“[The warning] means that life-threatening rip currents are likely, so anyone out there swimming should probably stay out of the water," Ramsey said. "If anyone does get caught in a rip current, just know the best way to escape is usually to move parallel to shore to get out of the rip current because the rip current is going to take you straight out to the ocean."

Ramsey said the chances for rain on Monday night as "kind of hit-or-miss,", but said there could be a "washout" on Tuesday. The temperature is expected to be around 70 degrees both days, according to the weather service forecast.

"The Tuesday into Tuesday night system is going to be a little bit more widespread rain — more of a washout scenario there," he said.

Clear weather is expected after Tuesday as a high-pressure system moves in, according to Ramsey. That system should keep the Island dry through Friday.
