Letter: Pay down debt from Shoreham plant
It is apparent that the Shoreham nuclear plant either should have never been built or should have been allowed to open, but that’s beyond anyone’s control [“Energy plan wins support,” News, Jan. 28].
What is within our power now is the ability to pay down the principal over time, so that future generations are not burdened with paying the interest on the bonds that were issued to finance this abandoned project. Some arrangement could be devised so that truly needy customers would be accommodated.
It’s bad enough that Long Island ratepayers have to pay higher rates today due to borrowing done decades ago. What’s worse is that they’ll have to pay for it decades from now.
For too long, we’ve been told this is not doable, but it is.
