Backman excited about chance to manage in Triple-A

Wally Backman spoke to Newsday about his anticipation for his new job opportunity, taking over the managerial post at Triple-A Buffalo.
“I really am excited,” Backman said at a MAB-Celebrity Services Event at Citi Field Sunday. “It’s a great city. The ownership up there has taken great care of me so far in the times I’ve had to go up there. I think we’re going to have a good product on the field this year.”
Backman, the former Mets second baseman, is taking another step up the rungs of the Mets organization, starting with Single-A Brooklyn in 2010 and then Double-A Binghamton in 2011. He began coaching in 2001.
Backman replaces Tim Teufel, who became the Mets’ new third base coach. He said he doesn’t view it necessarily as a promotion or a new challenge. Just another opportunity to serve the organization he loves.
“Hopefully on the big club they don’t have too many injuries but I think really we’re going to have a lot of guys in Triple-A that could still go to the big leagues,” Backman said. “So if there’s injuries and things like that, I think the organization’s more prepared to help the big club, if need be.”
